| ISO/TS 16949 Standards |
December 15, 2006) were developed for the automotive industry. QS-9000 and it's accompanying Supplement for Manufacturers of Tooling and Equipment were based on the older ISO 9000:1996 format and was specific to only the North American Automotive-related companies. Ford, GM and Chrysler, along with a few auto related OEM signatories developed and promoted QS-9000. ISO/TS 16949 is a Technical Standard based on the new ISO 9001:2000 format, but it is a combination of various North America and Europe automotive standards. Now it is no longer necessary for a company, that deals with international automotive OEM's to be compliant to multiple standards. TS 16949 is being universally recognized. TS 16949 is also more limited in which companies can be registered to the standard. As a strong general guideline, a company must make a part that appears on the vehicle. The company must also manufacture the parts. These ruling now exclude many QS-9000 companies, such as the tooling and equipment companies or design houses that strongly support the auto industry, but do not manufacture parts. During the transition from QS-9000 to TS 16949, non-part manufacturers are now evolving their QMS to meet the ISO 9001 requirements. However, those remaining QS-9000 organizations that have not yet transitioned to TS have unfortunately allowed their certification to lapse and may be jeopardizing future customer contracts. TS includes every requirement from ISO 9001:2000, but it also includes all of the automotive "additives". Requirements that are specific to this standard. Also, the expectation is that a company also meet their OEM customer requirements. One such requirement from Ford that most other OEMs are adopting, is the increased qualification requirements for Internal Auditing of your TS system. Bob Bremer Enterprises not only can provide the necessary training, but can also perform your internal audits for you -- allowing your personnel to continue with their job responsibilities. In other words -- there can be quite a bit more work involved in meeting the registration requirements of TS 16949. Companies familiar with QS- 9000 may find the transition less threatening than companies that have minimal experience with this standard. We have over 25 years experience with the automotive industry and understand the unique requirements of this standard. Call or email for additional information.
